Canton's Pioneers in Flight
Popular author and Curator of the William McKinley Presidential Library and Museum, Kimberly Kenney will give a brief talk at 11:00 AM in the conference room about early aviation in Stark County and William and Almina Martin. William’s monoplane, now hanging in the MAPS hanger gallery, was built 100 years ago. On January 12, 1909, the glider was first towed aloft by their farm horse, with William at the controls. Almina Martin was the second person to fly the glider, making her the first woman in the world to solo a heavier-than-air aircraft. Ms. Kinney will be available to sign copies of her book “Canton’s Pioneers in Flight” immediately after her talk. The talk is free with the purchase of a breakfast. Space is limited.
